Test or take water to lfs to be tested and if any traces of ammonia or nitrite shows after test then yes dose with the prime.

just did a test ...nitrates -40ppm
Nitrites- 5.0ppm
Chlorine-0.0
alkalinity-80ppm
Ph-8.4

You have nitrate that is an excellent sign.

I don' think it tests for ammonia ...i have the marineland 6-1 test strips

Ok I personally use the API liquid test kit it's more accurate. I suggest purchasing the API Freshwater Test kit in the future. Until then take a sample of water to your lfs to be tested for Ammonia.
