yes it freshwater, so no archer fish

Ok so tall bodied fish, hmm

Aren't Eleotris brackish?
I think they are...
that's what my research tells me...
and also where I caught the three that I caught were at the mouthes of small streams running onto a rock beach.

I have a 7-8" Cowfish and it is freshwater,i keep it with 2 huge Lima cats,a RTC/TSN cat,a 15-16" Jardini,a 7-8"Bala shark and a 5-6"Wolf fish eveything is fine the cowfish even hangs out with the RTC/TSN when he is not hiding in his rock,Cowfish are pigs though he cant seem to get enough food.

no offense to above poster's, but just because you hear that it works for someone else doesn't mean that it will work for you... or work period in the long run.

Water Cow's get 17" and Eleotris Picta IS brackish. It "may be doing fine in freshwater" but that is a sure way to kill it prematurely. It won't fit in a 55g by itself for too long, rather less with other fish. I would keep it by itself it you insist on putting it in a 55", maybe some hard fast dithers like Blue/Red Colombian Tetras. Just because it looks small in the tank doesn't mean it doesn't stretch what you have in there.

Eats like a pig=poops like a pig=will foul 55 gallons of water very quickly.

seems to swing in both fresh and brackish. this is what fishbase had to say

"Inhabits rivers of low to high current velocity and stagnant waters between sea level and 100 m elevation, generally occurs in freshwaters but sometimes in slightly brackish river mouths. More abundant near the coast and only large individuals are found upstream. Benthic species that lies waiting for prey, shrimps and fish under stones or overhanging shorelines "
