Oregon, it's part of 'Murica!
I would like to get a water dragon so I would like a little help. BEFORE you tell me to Google it, I already am but would like to get this forums opinion on the matter as well so please don't tell me to google because I already am.

1. I plan on getting one around 8 inches, is this a baby or juvie?
2. I am gonna get a 55 gallon for it since Petco is doing $1 per gallon sale, will this be fine for said water dragon?
3. How much swimming area should I include?
4. My room gets to the low 60's at night, do I need some kind of heating, what kind?
5. Whats growth rate for average?
6. How hot for basking spot?
7. How to sex?
8. Any difference between male or female such as size or color?

Could you please show me pictures of your setups for a general idea of how it should be done.

most of your questions can be answered by this care sheet.

I have not kept them personally so I can't really tell you what to do but I can help you out with a few of the questions.

I know that water dragons need a fairly large enclosure so although the 55 may last a year it will eventually be much to small. I would recommend building your own tank since any that are the size you will need are just too expensive.
Water dragons do not NEED to have water to swim in but it is much better to do so. For one that is the size you are getting, a cat litter pan will work well (and it will be good for a good portion of its' life until it is about full grown when it will need something bigger.
As for sexing them, look for the femoral pores underneath the back legs of the lizard. Males have much bigger pores and females are often difficult to see. As far as further dimorphism, I do not know.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks I plan on building a habitat for it in the spring. I was thinking of doing a half or 1/3 swimming area and the rest land kinf od like how this one is setup http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v826gKKl42M

8 inches as in how, and Fish Tanks aren't good unless you like your Dragons without a face.........

Basking spot at 130 degrees like any Lizard, and hold your Horses on the sexing thing.......You won't know for awhile........

glass tanks are much much better than screen enclosures.

8 inches from head to tail. The tank will be 48 x 12 x 21 and I plan on building him/her a cage/habitat thing in the spring so its not like it will be in it for long. Still better than someone putting one in a 20 gallon like I have seen in the past.

After reading a bit I realized it can't sex right away which sucks but thats ok.

i disagree with the theory that water dragons can not be kept in tanks. they need high humidity which screens do not allow.

also, they are only trying to constantly escape if they are cramped in a 10g at a petshop.

setup a suitable habitat with some visual barriers and the animal will become very tame IMO/experience.

the worst thing i did was give up my CWD. i actually got it for free since it had a nasty case of mouthrot when i first got it. i had him hand feeding fish and insects in no time and taking nice warm "baths" in my sink lol
