I keep my tanks about 2 inches below the trim but I also use sponge filters as my sole filtration and don't want the water spalshing out the top. Also some of my bigger fish like to play at the top and I don't need anyone getting out. Also with 17 tanks I don't worry about water spots on the glass. If I had a SHOW tank as I have in the past I keep the tnak full and glass spotless but a different story if breeding fish.
P.S. I also keep my tnaks bare bottom if that bothers you aswell.
