Water Lily question

Thanks saltiery, will try also Hydroponic Impatients, they look nice.
Actually last season I placed the cutted ends of a type of Hedera which has small leaves and goes horizantal, now the ends in the water they have allready rooted (bare) and the other ends are climbing over the edge stones and make roots on the soil, where ever they reach. But not so attractive optically.

Yes placing rocks and gravel over the pots, is a solution also, besides the pots are being too heavy to handle when necessary, but have to go with it.

Those cuttings are a great way to hide gaps in rocks and such.

Thanks Salti.

like I said, lava rock is a lightweight medium for the surface of pots that will keep the koi out. They really don't like the feel. I had the drain almost full of pebbles that they dislodged and dropped in the pond from the plant shelf. The bigger they get, the more destructive they can be...probably from sheer boredom

Just my two cents... I always use solid larger pots so the roots/rhisomes will not break through especially the cheapo baskets. They stink!!! Pot them up with 3/4 regular top soil (cheapo stuff) and make sure there is no added fertilizers. You can also use clay type soil. DO NOT USE POTTING SOIL! Use some eggcrate also known as flo. light diffusers cut to size and put any type of gravel on top of that. The koi will not be able to get past the eggcrate and the lilly will grow right through. Koi generally will eat the roots of most aquatic plants and can really make a mess! GL! This works great for lotus too! BTW, splitting the rhizomes yearly and bi-weekly fertilizer (directly fed) will increase the number of flowers during the growing season.

Thanks for the different ideas. Yes ofcourse no potting soil also added fertiliser. I use my plain garden soil that is clay and seems work fine. Still not re-potted yet since the water cold. Hope to start after 2 weeks.

cut a hole in a sock or stockings and surround the base pot in that and burry in the gravel. It worked for me.
