water parameters: perfect ammonia, nitrate, but high nitrite.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I tested last night and nitrite was still high but no more deaths. I lost half of my ghost shrimp in the first 24 hrs but had only attributed that too them being fickle little creatures. Then I lost the rainbow and I got terrified.

Did another 40 percent water change last night.

Will continue to update this thread.

No i did not add the water from the pet store to my tank.

I got home last night and my tank was in full cycle, with 3 dead rainbows with that film you get on the water surface during first cycle. Firstly the fish have only be in the tank for 3 days the tank itself has been up for a total of 2 weeks. The aquarium, gravel, and filter are all seasoned and cycled prior to this setup. I'm so confused.

At any rate I grabbed 2 running sponge filters from my 300 gallon and moved em up. The pump they are on is solid and moves allot of air so they have good flow. I've more than doubled my filtration on this little barely stocked 30 gallon. Where the cycle is coming from is beyond me.

U didnt have bubbles in ur 30? The bubbles aid in the air exchange and help bacteria grow

Sorry if I didn't clarify I was using a cascade 300 on my 30 gallon tank. I just pulled 2 sponge filters out of my 300 gallon fish tank in my basement and added them to my 30 gallon in my room that is having the issue.

Update this morning I witnessed one more of my celebes rainbows dieing for no apparent reason :^/ I'm not sure what is going on with my tank. I'm going to test it again tonight and do another water change(already did one this morning.)

What exactly are u testing for??!
Akalinity?
Ph?
Hardness?
Nitrites?
Nitrates? Ammonia?

Let us know

Nitrates, not detectable
Nitrites, not detectable
Ammonia not detectable
PH, 8

That is all my testing kit covers.

I have several tanks that all get this water and this is the only one with the issue. There is a 35 gallon hex next to it that got a near identical setup but had new gravel. That tank has 3 rope fish in it and is exactly the same age.
