water params for oscar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have 2 aquatech power filters, one came with the tank, i bought the other one afterwards...the tank has been running for 2 years, it should be cycled by now?

Should be, but most of your bacteria is held in the filters. I'm not familar with those, so I'll do some homework and see what they have to offer.

maybe someone with some experience with these can speak up as well.

What size tank is each filter rated for?

30-60 gallons..in a 55 gal tank.

edit: ammonia level is 1.0ppm not 2.0 (sorry my typo)

still shouldnt be that much. How much are you feeding, and what is inside your filters?

Sounds like you need to upgrade your filtration to cope with the amount of waste being produced. Oscars, JD's, Pleco's and even goldfish create a lot of waste...

Make sure your not over feeding too.

i only feed as much as he will take in before he starts just spitting it all back out. i feed him the large cichlid sticks..they are messy but he loves them..and i also feed him hikari gold pellets moreoften because they are less messy. i dont feed feeders. there are 2 active carbon filter bags in each for a total of 4. there are 2 bio-fiber pads in each filters..also fora total of four. maybe i should replace the bio pads in the older filter which is about a years and 7 months older than the new filter pads...although the box for the filter says they never need to be changed...they are supposed to eliminate ammonia on contact..but obviously they arent working.

i would replace the carbon with some other type of biological filtration.

any suggestions?

i probably just need to get new filters with biological filtration...what are good quality ones? I can't afford anything insanely expensive..I really know nothing about wet/dry filters...i woudl like to try one i'm just scared to because i dont know anything about them. *noob* haha...the water params on all my other tanks are reading pretty well but the oscar tank, due to high waste output, is going nutso.
