Sounds like Tannins from the driftwood to me. which turn the water almost tea colored how dark depends on how much the dw leeches. I have peices that are years old that still leech pretty good. and particles def from the plecos scrapeing the wood. a finer pre-filter media might fix your problem.. This is assumeing your water perematers are fine, and that water quality is not the issue.

I don't know ... the bioload shouldn't really be too much for a fx5 on a 110 . basically you've got an oscar , a goldfish and a pleco . the other plecos are too small to contribute so much . poster above may be on to something with the sand . was it thouroughly washed ? how mature is your tank ? try not feeding for a few days and see what happens .
