WC Ceara?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My focus on the Wild caught or not is more about honesty as is in all business. We pay high $ for fish we hope will look like ones we have seen posted as Wild Caught adults. Vendors who sell get big $'s by labeling as such. So, they should be held accountable by us consumers if it ends up not being so. We turn to the experienced cichla keepers for knowledge & often hear news we don't like, but it's all good if we do the right thing & demand from the sellers in 1 of 2 ways. Either you have to NEVER buy from them again or work out some sort of deal to make things right. There are thieves in all types of business. Some last a while but most do not. They are all about the $ and not developing long term relationships so if we don't put up with it they will not exist very long. And don't listen to the excuses they start to give if you call them out!

I agree with you on that 100%.. What people need to realize is that F1 F2 ect does not affect the fishes appearances still. The genes are still good especially if you breed with different blood lines. Example: you have a F1 then breed it with a wild or even a F1 or F2 from a different blood line, not with it's brother or sister. You will have better genetics that way. I laugh at some people that don't wanna touch F1 because they think it won't turn out colorful. They really don't understand breeding or genetics if they think that. Don't get me wrong, wild caught is the best to get but it just means that the wild fish have the best genes, that is all.

Honestly. I find it strange that all these WC rare collection point Cichla came in "not in session" if you will. O_O

It is not possible to tell wild caught fish from F1 F2... Possibly F3 you will start to see the fish with less coloration because the genes are getting weak, but it's impossible to tell a wild caught from a F1. As for who to buy fish off of, you just have to go with trust because who knows, the some suppliers in Belem don't care, they will false advertise fish to vendors. They could say there wild but they are really F1, or F2 you'll never know either.. So if your one of those people that are so concerned on your wild fish really being wild, then the only 100% way to know for sure that you have wild fish is too go to brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, ect and go catch them your self ;) that's really the only way you'll know.

+1 learned my lesson from one of my Taiwan import claiming for wc but recently ruled that they are not.

You're never to be100% sure of which fish is wc unless you're the one who to collect it. Even certain bass in the wild in brazil aren't really wc as they farm peacock bass down there now and keep introducing new species from one river system to the other.
The true meaning of wc kelberi doesn't exist anymore.
The ceara are from brazil from the ceara region.
That's all the supplier information will give me. They won't say the exact location or anything specific.

To be able to tell the difference between cb or wc is difficult. Unless its improper inbreed. Most of the times it happens accidentally. Those are the ones that comes out super ugly as they are brothers and sisters.
If the cichla are properly bred I'm sure they'll be stunners and may be even better looking than wild.

As of right now the only 2 kelberi I know for sure that have been bred in captivity are Bahia and rio araguaia kelberi.
If you do not want to get cb that's listed as wc I suggest don't ever get them again.
Sometimes we the vendor can not control the lies our suppliers give us.
And in the end we get blamed for. We pay the big money as well and take the risks as well. We lose a lot in it and mainly not about the money. I spent a lot of a Datnoid that's claimed to be something it's not and now it's sitting in my tank and I don't want to sell them cause I do not want to sell something they're not if I know they're not. That's the way this hobby is.
I hate to get fish for something they're not and I have to pay a lot more for them.

Who is to blame when the suppliers lies to the ones who sells them?
We will not know how much the vendors or fish stores actually a pays for the fish. We can not just go into assumption they get for Pennys and sell for dollars while we won't know how much they actually put into it. Now if they actually know and do sell for something they're not then its a completely different story.
The thing with this cichla things its very contaminated with lies. The best option is to never label as wc or cb since its always a gamble. We will not know how the specific peacock bass will grow up looking like until they actually are grown.

Exactly!.....When bass are introduced to a new area that they don't naturally occur in They Are No Longer WC......Where do you think the fingerlings that are introduced come from? More than likely they are cb or farm raised fingerlings that are introduced to new areas for sports fishing and food.

I saw some pics from a exporter showing some cichla that he was selling and he showed the parents also and they were in a large pond that he was breeding them in. But he was selling them as WC.....I have enough sense to know that pond bred cichla aren't Wc, but I don't think he cared and was just looking for a quick buck. With guys like that exporting fish it seems like theres only a select few that can be trusted.
