That all sounds good but the people who dominate this particular industry dont have the time to concern themselves with humanely raising and killing animals when there are paying customers waiting for food, they have to get this stuff to their marketplace as soon as possible. When demand surpasess what the so called farms can produce we know where the meat mongers will turn to in order to keep the revenue flowing....and the Dodo will have more company.

Ditto...

Anyone who eats meat from the grocery store, aka factory farms is eating an animal that was not necessarily humanely killed. Look into it... Its big business which is why you are eating hormones and other nasties.

But umm yea on the endangered note; consuming the rare and endangered and fueling illegal trafficking makes me sick. Ancient culture can conflict with modern times because values are lost through time. And you cannot be sustainable or conserve with such a large population.

That allways shocks me on these wildlife programs and stuff they show markets in little fishing villages with stunning arrowana and RTC's and brycon etc if only they had a way of selling them directly to the hobby they would make like a years pay from one arrowana. That turtle is amazing its a truly sad sight to see:(

Not nescesarily about making a years pay, its about providing other people with food too.

I have to ask.Over their,do they value any pets the way we do dogs, cats, fish, reptiles and such? One of the main reasons this bugs some of us is I would love to have that as a pet,and it would respond to me like a pet.If I took one of their goldfish or koi or whatever they prize as a pet or show animal Im sure they would be thinking WTF ,this guy just fried up my koi Baton Rouge style. Those of you who say,um,no big deal here,,,,,,,,,remember that a very large portion of ppl in the usa keep and love turtles as pets the same way some do cats and dogs.So all Im asking is to not think we are being unfair or stupid for not liking them dying for food when Im sure they could eat something else.I see all the views and points in this,Im just mentioning this in case some dont get this side of it.

Well Jason Longboard, I think now that people over in China are making more money and getting better living conditions, they are now starting to be able to afford pets. It is a luxury, as most of our pets (cats/dogs/even fish) are predators and can be expensive (to many of them) to feed. (It'd be much easier to keep a pet like a rabbit, but honestly they don't compare to cats/dogs)

In my grandmother's town, you had to have an expensive license to own a dog. How many people could afford that? Just the few rich people who want one. I think slowly as more people in China are able to afford pets then they will have the same values towards animals as many in the US have. There are some stories of people doing what they can for the animals over there, like an old woman who sold her businesses to take care of stray animals, and she got showcased on the news when that big earthquake hit near the panda reserve area.

=__________=" if they ate it because it was getting too old and dying, I'd be fine! but poor turtle just got slaughtered!
Well, that's just my view!
And man.. put a warning sign on the thread LOL!

when i was a kid i had softshell turtle soup almost weekly....... yea kinda like chicken with alot of skin.......

I remember bout 10years back when i worked retail we came upon 2 giant softshell turtles with close 24" shells....... they were too big for the 100gallon and could use their necks to knock off the lid...... so we put up a free sign for anyone who wanted them....... for weeks no one wanted them because they were very aggressive....... then one day a asian lady walked in....... she asked me if they were free..... i said "yes" she leaves and comes back with a old man....... both started looking at the tank and started nodding their heads....... i had a bad feeling so i told them that we already sold them to someone........

i dont remember what ever happened to them.....

In China they will eat ANYTHING that won't eat them 1st! Dogs and cats are on the menu too!
