Weeksii jumped out of tank :(

My bowfin jumped out the other day I found him on the ground I picked him up and put him back in the tank free play dead for about a minute and then a swim to the bottom he was almost dried up to

i wasnt so lucky. He looked worse every day and when i woke up yesterday he was upside down and floating on the surface, but his gills were still moving. I was pretty sure he wasnt going to recover. when i got home from work it smelled like dead fish in the house 
I have been getting rid of some of my smaller endlis. why didn't one of them jump out? i wanted to keep the weeksii...i think i want to get another one but i never see them around here.

actually, the lfs nearby said they will order some for me...but it might be a while before they get them in. dealing with the shipping process of live fish always scares me...
