Please don't think I'm a Wal-mart fan. I was just giving a fair critique of this ones current condition. I mean my dad used to a manager for the Ben Franklin stores and Wal-mart specifically ran them out of business. Sam Walden originally pitched his 'big store' idea to them and when they turned him down and he opened his own store he went after them. Now my dad works for Target, and as I cant get hired anywhere I'm living in the house he pays for. Just to be clear my family and I are not Wal-mart people. If I could find a LFS I would shop there.

Nah it's cool. I mean if the prices are low which they will be they will get sales it's inevitable. I buy things there, just not fish, dogs, and that such kind of things at Walmart. I just work at Petsmart the place which they specifically that they are going to attack in the pet industry, lol. F that.

Didnt see the question. We have no fish stores here in Mooresville. Nearest non chain store to me, and that I'm aware of is in Avon. As I said the walmart here has a good looking violet goby if your looking for one. Where are you from and how are the stores there? You said down here in Mooresville, so Indy?

a little further north .. South Bend .. and the fish here suck .. im thinking about going out to chi town to find good fish

years ago we had a fish store here called itzazoo. They would get you anything you wanted. They got shut down for getting people anything they wanted (whether it was legal or not) Sadly, I wasn't into fish keeping then.

Walmart is famous for buying product at its lowest bulk price (unfortunately quality is hand n hand with price) and spending the saved income on advertising (probably subliminal, i mean have you seen the dancing smiley face? wtf?!) soo 8 out of ten times your paying for 30% advertisement, and none of the other 70% is going to employee education on specific departments, im not one to criticize the mentally handicapped but it seems thats all our walmart wants to hire. and i mean that in a complete literal sense.

wow thats shocking. im in indianapolis so not too far from you. the walmart close to me (Beech Grove) doesn't give a crap about their fish the employee said they dont care if the fish die they get replaced for free. i talked them into giving me a puffer that was dying. there were 2 in the tank one already dead and the other one was laying on the bottom still breathing but hardly moving. so i got him for free but he didnt make it :( better chance with me than walmart i just wish i would have got to him sooner..

The only reason I go to petsmart is because they have a bigger selection and better equipment atleast in my situation the employees at petsmart are just as bad as walmart example "excuse me can you get me a male and female convict please" she walks over looking at the tags on the tanks till she finds the convicts then turns to me and says "I dont know how to tell the males and females apart" so I see a nice male I want and so I tell her just try and get that one (the tank was packed) and 20 mins later after chaseing the fish all over the place she caught it then she managed to get a small feamale....pretty much all my next fish and equipment is comeing from online though petsmart did just have a killer deal on some of there food so ill deff be checking back for deals from time to time... hate not haveing any LFS ugh....

As the OP noted that the fish are doing well has more to do with - random - individual employee initiative than any consistent plan by Wal-Mart corporate to ensure that fish and other animals receive adequate care. Dead fish and other animals are simply spoilage to them.

I quit shopping at Wal-Mart FOR ANYTHING some time ago.

Wal-Mart - in general - takes poor care of its fish and other live animals.

Wal-Mart also has been found guilty of cheating employees out of overtime, discrimination, violating employment laws for returning military veterans, shifting healthcare costs to taxpayers and a whole host of other illegal and unethical practices. And shopping there is an unpleasant experience.

Giving them my money supports them and supports their business model. So I don't. Even if Wal-Mart is a few cents cheaper than the many alternatives.

Doesn't add much to this thread, but I hate Walmart and avoid it like the plague. Will continue to do so as long as I can. And not to bash petsmart and/or pet supermarket but there is rarely anything unusual/exotic down here and what they have is never well priced. Getting to know your lfs (if one is local to you) is still the best way to go, if you have one of course.

Amen to getting to know your LFS!

A good LFS will order whatever you want...and not charge you an arm and a leg above wholesale (especially if you pick it up right away).

It's all about relationships...
