i've seen these floating around, i've definetly been tempted to buy, much more so than any other hybrid.

any Idea on max size? and what are they a hybrid of?

No addiction, just a fluke. There are way to many nice CA cichlids out there for me to devote more tank space to hybrids.

I can't speak for MM, but purist douchbags really do help the sale of hybrids.

Fish are just like dogs, cats, cows, chickens.....we bend their genetics to please us, look at the pigeons people breed.
Hybrids add to the overall interest for most of the people that keep them and like discus / bettas / angels and most of all the good old goldfish, we will do as we please.
