I have a 53g breeder tank with a group of 4 rope fish, 1 sen bichir, and a pair of small bushy plecos. It is moderately planted with both aquatic plants and pothos ivy. The lighting is subdued. The temp is normal. The water perams should be fine.

Nothing major has changed over the last couple weeks except that my rope fish seem to be getting lethargic. Showing less energy and interest in food until tonight they altogether aren't swimming around and show no intention of going after their floating shrimp (a favorite). I've noticed over the last several days that a couple of them seem to be breathing slightly deeper and faster than usual, the other two are normal. I don't think it's the same two always doing this, I think they're taking turns or something. Also they seem to be communally hiding more, two or three at a time to a small cave occassionally.

The only abnormalities I can think of really in the last couple weeks have been:
-I've had to skip two water changes recently, so the last two changes have been two weeks apart. Considering the stock, that shouldn't be a problem and hasn't in the past. My other tanks aren't affected like this and are much heavier stocked.
-I've added a skull decoration. I think the behaviour was a good few days before that though. I've taken the skull out.(2 days)
-I've done a recent water change. (4 days ago)
-I've removed a swatch of rotten roots from the pothos that had been trapped in the nets I used for them. (yesterday)

Does anyone have any ideas? Should I do another water change? What should I be looking for?

Please help... these are my babies here. :(

Water changes and raise temp a little. Maybe add some salt. Those things cure almost all fish problems in my experience.

I wouldnt raise the temp maybe add a bubbler ? Could be lack of oxygen, do you have a co2 system for the plants?

It's not going to be a lack of oxygen. Pretty sure these guys (rope fish) are surface breathers. They can survive in water with very low oxygen levels. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'll do a big water change then. Rope are surface breathers, but even if they weren't the oxygen levels shouldn't have changed. The plecos and bichir are unaffected by whatever's going on. I juct checked (morning now) and some of the shrimp I put in last night are still floating around. So eerie.

Couple quick questions.
How large is the senegal?
Have you seen the plecos rasp or latch onto the ropefish at anytime?
Are there any red areas on the fishes bodies?

Senegal is about 7 inches. The bushys don't go near the ropes, EVER. The ropes look completely physically sound.

They're starting to show a bit more activity, and I've seen a slight interest in food somewhat. Nothing radical though, I'm still very worried. I'm thinking of trying the salt next.

I only ask because I got 3 ropefish and put them in with my ~8inch sen I noticed the sen would stalk the ropes and occasionally nip at their tales. Unfortunately I didn't think anything of it at the time. By the next morning the 3 were dead and had bite marks covering the length of their bodies.

As for the salt I would definitely recommend a little bit it never hurts and will ensure the prevention of any infections. They could just not be particularly active, from the sounds of it there isn't much to be worried about.
