last night my big red oscar and port acar spawned and i have about 2 dozen or more firtlized eggs most of them didint get fertlized though i think that they are gonna be sick:headbang2:nilly::grinno::grinno:
 
The eggs will probably turn white soon. I have never heard of an Oscar breeding with an unrelated cichlid. If it does, I'm happy for you. Post pics when you can.
 
I think Oscars will only breed with Oscars.
 
Well then, you might be the first person to cross breed an O. I would LOVE a fry if you will ship some from the next batch.:D

You're saying that an Oscar and another cichlid produced offspring?! Definitely worth repeating! I was just looking at some and they do look a lot like Oscars after all. Not that appearance means anything scientifically, but things that can hybridize tend to be similar in form anyway.

Sorry they died. Check your water quality, the most common reason for fry to fall ill is poor water quality. I use sponge filters with weak pumps and lots of live plants to raise my fry.
 
You most likely either have 2 Oscars or no Oscar at all. You can only cross breed fish that are 1. in the same genus 2. different genus but closely related, i.e. aequidens pulcher (blue acara) x aequidens rivulatus (green terror) will produce viable fry, or amphilophus trimaculatus x amphilophus labiatus.

Astronotus sp. are one of the most popular/commonly kept cichlids in the hobby and so far no one has been able to cross breed em with another species, except for other species in the astronotus genus like crassipinnis (sp?) and orbicularis.

That and the fact that your "mom and dad" didn't let you take a picture leads me to believe you don't know for sure what fish you have in that tank.
