walmart is going to sell fish regardless... thier lack of knowlage can be good ex. i bought 8-7" butterfly koi for $6 each!!! they thought they were gold fish! i also bought 3-3" bala sharks for $4.86 each every were else they were $15 each. besides...YOU CAN'T STOP THE WALMART!!!!!!!!!

Most people that buy fish at walmart are complete noobs anyway.

"Oh I bought a fish, tank, heater, and rocks at walmart yesterday and went home and set it all up. The fish died today. All the fish are diseased at walmart."

I bought a fish at walmart 8 years ago. He's still alive:clap. Guess that makes me a pro:D.

walmart, petsmart, petco the main problem is that all the tanks are linked togther and they give little to no food to the fish. so if one fish gets sick it spreads fast. i bought a tiger oscar from walmart it had ick. i isolated it, treated it, grew it to 10" and sold it and it live to this day! it is all in someones mindset if a store is good or not. it doesn't matter the only diff is price you pay more for the same fish at some stores then others! don't get me wrong i hate walmart with a passion but for diff reasons then fish quality!

I would never buy fish from walmart and i would never pay 6$ for an upside down cat of any kind. I got my 2 upside downs (blk) for 2.99 at petco.

I have found that all Walmart, Meijer, Petsmart, Petco, and similar chain stores are not created equal in regards to their fish. There are two Walmarts in my city and one is far better than the other due to a few employees also being fish keepers. One in particular has a young lady who I have personally witnessed discouraging people from buying inapproiate species. I have seen a few employees at a local Petsmart do the same, but I have meet others that were not so well informed.

Even if they do have some qualified people the fish don't seem to last long stacked up in all those small tanks. I reccomend hanging out a bit to see how a store operates its fish department. If it seems okay find out when they get new fish in and check the day after. If they have something you want get it out of there before it begins to degrade.

You might also find that some of these retail stores have under priced fish sometimes misidentified and you can get them cheaper. I saw several synodontis cats that cost $15+ at a pet store for $7 at a Meijer. I recently scored on some nice Golden Tinfoil Barbs that had just come into Walmart at about 6", for only $2.44. That is like a quarter of what they would sell for around here at pet store or LFS. A great deal that I will eventually trade in at a LFS for more than I paid.

I'm the aquatics specialist at my petco. My tanks are nearly spotless (unless I haven't been there in a couple days), I feed well and when I run into a parasite problem I set up a quarantine and won't sell out of the whole column until I'm sure it's gone. If a customer has an unsuitable setup for the fish they want, I will refuse the sale. If we don't have what you want and it's available through my vendor I will special order it for you. Most of my stock comes in on thursday morning. I may not be the most knowledgeable but my tanks look damn good. As for the other petcos in my area, only one keeps bad looking tanks that I have seen. It's all in which location you go to. Stop in and check mine out. N Michigan Rd in Indianapolis right before Carmel and Zionsville. Ask for Dave, Pat or Joe and any one of us will be glad to take care of you. :)
