Wels Catfish anyone???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
please post pics as I'm skeptical. Someone people who thought they had a wels actually had a ompok cat WHICH does look very close to a wels. Also wallagos look similar.

Just about to say that...

I sent this person a PM a few days ago and no reply yet. Pics will settle the question, if you search wels catfish on the search function you will see that there were so many threads with people thinking they had wels and it turns out to be a ompok as they look VERY alike or wallago leeris.

Silurus uncommon in the hobby due to being illegal in North America, or so I thought...

no its not illegal in north america. Check my threads, I have a true wels catfish, one of the very few that own one.

hmm i dought he just picked a true wel up considering how much mkman is having extreme trouble finding a second one. Besides if it is a true wels it should probibly go to mkman for proper care.!!

lol thanks sanitwongesi! I had put up a thread a while back and none could be found. I even contacted all the vendors and none. It could be likely he did get one as I have heard of some LFS getting them in very rarely BUT pictures are needed to really identify it. Like I said, ompok really look like wels and so do small wallagos.

Whoa mkman, that's awesome! I wonder why they're so rare then. Perhaps it has to do with export restrictions form their originating countries.

Probably not export restrictions they are just not that pretty and get huge! They are an invasive species in greece and they are trying to eradicate them.

paroons get huge, so do rtcs, same with filamentosums, and many other fish but they can be found but Wels give me a hard time!

They aren't illegal here but perhaps there are restrictions internationally.
