Whats the legal status of owning a wels catfish? I see so many huge catfish but no Wels. Are they illegal to keep? i know they are taking over the waters in europe and are probably outlawed there but what about in the US? Are there any Wels keepers here that i just seemed to have over looked?

The situation that is occuring in the U.K would most certaintyl happen in the U.S. Is it even moral to even start to think about the housing for one of these fish? Very few people should ever have the oppurtunity to own one. Those people are public aquaria owners.

thats why i was asking. mt memphis zoo has 3 RTCs that are 65+ lbs and i was thinking it woul be nice for them to have one

Once again mystix, what do you think of arapaima owners then eh?

Wels are popular in asia, i've seem pics of some biggish (for in a tank) wells from japanese websites before, but yea, never heard of them in america (definetly not in aus either.)

If you honestly ask yourself, how many people have the resouces to house a full grown Arapaima or Wels Catfish?

Asia is popular, and well known for having outrageously large fish in a tank much too small.

um right rtcs 65 lbs.
the record is somewhere round 500lbs for wels. when i lived in france we used to catch theese they get well over 8 feet long.of cousre we only caught 3fters. point is unless uve got a 50000 gallon tank foret about it.

Given the fact that wels prefer cold water I couldn't see any reason why a dedicated keeper couldn't build a huge pond to house a few! I think its a shame they aren't availible to us in the US but yes irresponsible morons would certainly buy them for thier 125 gal tanks and then dump them in rivers when they got too big...*sigh*
