that's not an excuse to get a fish that nobody can house.

If your going to post read whats been written previously.

The Wells Catfish can grow as big as a great white shark.

Record GW is a couple tons...

what's this rubbish about 'nobody can house' !!

There are at least two guys in the USA that I know of with wels and I had one for 10 years that never grew past 3ft .. I currently have one that I have had for 18 months that has probably not grown more than 3".. it's about water and food management ..

As for monster potential - they are awesome fish.

As for realeasing into the wild !!! I'm afraid that the US has something of a chequered record with tropical, temperate and marine species, as well as Birds, mammals and reptiles - I can well understand why there are restrictions....

here in the uk they stay smaller i think because the cold winters means they can not feed as much Imagen the potential of these in some parts of the us none stop year round eating :ROFL:

i heard they get to differnt sizes because of temprature oh and nick bakers wierd creatures (if thats even how to spell it) has a eposode called frankenstien fish it is about wells catfish

johnptc, arapaimag...
i don't remember what size tank johnptc has(wasn't it only 5k) but last i rember reading wasn't he was having trouble with his arapaima getting too big, arapaimag might be able to house but that doesn't mean that they should be brought to the US, where just like 99.9% of the other monster sized cats, they will be put into tanks that are far from suitable.

in what size tank and what do you mean by water and food management.

Hey lophius, where did you get your wels, I want one...am I going to have to learn to fish???

Danyal - normal ways of keeping monster fish a manageable size - we put them into tanks and it is our responsibility to ensure that they are kept appropriately and that we don't end up with a 4ft fish in a 2ft tank ! - limited food and moderate water changes - basically stunting - whilst maintaining the fish in pretty much pristine condition -

Edward - I got mine from a fish farm. occassionally you'll see them on classifieds - where abouts are you?

In scotland at the minute, but Id travel to get one!
