escaped? Its not like its going to jump out of the tank and walk to the nearest lake system.

 Imagine trying to explain how you lost a 18ft fish! The Wels were purposely released in most parts of europe cause they rock!!! And all the nay sayers, this is suppose to be MONSTER fish keepers... If you dont think people should try and keep MONSTER fish, you may be in the wrong place! Thats like calling yourself a mountaineer and not wanting to climb K2 cause its too high??????

I believe Wels are illegal to keep in the US because I am sure many of the catfish lovers here would have got one already. They are already illegal in parts of Europe I believe.

They are native to europe east of the rhine, and were introduced to spain, france and italy and UK cause they are fun to fish. They grow larger in the southern climes as they only grow in the warmer weather. Some say the came to the UK in the middle ages, but a lot of people think they were introduced here in the 1800's. They have been here a long time and the record is 62lbs. The record books have been closed now apparently as people started importing Wels above the british record weight. In the UK you now need a licence to keep them due to our stupid government, who say introductions are a big problem, well they should now as they are responsible for the worst...

Any fish that can live in cool water needs a licence...in order to preserve our 'native' fauna, which is a joke as ecologists estimate 60% of flora and fauna in the UK are introduced species! Thats what happens when you have an Empire...lol.
