WELS, NILE PERCH and more offically banned

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the info.
At some points I think we can only own gold fish. Oh, wait. Does gold fish already an invasive species in some States?

I suspect that this is just the tip of the iceberg and they will be adding more fish to the list.We probably have one or a few of the animal rights wacko groups to thank thank for this.

Yea....might as well ban cats and dogs while they are at it....I mean God forbid they become strays and prey on our native birds and rabbits lol....I mean COME ON really...these laws/restrictions are beginning to get crazy. I am constantly reading into potential new banbed fish to be added so I can see what they are and get my hands on them before it's too late.

TBH, I have already seen what our Flathead catfish can do to an ecosystem they aren't native to.......i don't even want to THINK what a Wels twice their size could do.......our FLatheads only go up to around 120-125lbs
this little guy is a 40'lb'er. Imagine a 200lbs+ Wels in creeks and rivers only a few feet deep in waters that are ALREADY over-fished

Kinda moot now but I guess it's a good thing very few wels are brought into the hobby to run the risk of any of them winding up in some waterways.

dude, some fish are just incredibly ravenous......the fish with huge mouths will swallow anything they can.....look how the Wels has adapted to eating birds and hunting shorelines in areas of Ebro River, Spain.....that CAN'T be good no matter where in the world they are. This is not normal behavior from the Wels, but as it is introduced to different places, it evolves and adapts to survive in new environments. That is what keystone predators do, especially w/ no natural enemies to keep the population in check.

Look at what the Nile Perch has already done to Lake Victoria

Yeah I understand all of that dude but I'm not aware that the two fish in question coming into this country in any large amounts that would result in handfuls of them eventually being released.Like I already said, this is the tip of the iceberg and there are forces at play here who are not concerned about ecology and conservation.Enjoy your fish while you have them folks!.....

i know and i feel both sides of the debate, but from seeing this type of stuff through past experiences, the thing people MUST REMEMBER is.......

it only takes ONE gravid/pregnant female to colonize an entire watershed.

Wels catfish isn't a livebearer. It takes two fish to colonize an entire watershed. That said it's unlikely for someone to dumped an overpriced rare catfish in waters.
