Wet/Dry Filter for 180 creating FOAM?!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry, misspelled POLYFILTER polybiomarine makes it I have used them for years , they are a propreity pads since the seventies that adsord and absorb organics, Po4, insectisides and etc, high end filter pads used in labs and by myself and both marine and freshwater Aquarists that change color and can possibly show based on the pad color what is being adsorded like iron, copper ammonia etc, tell the boyfriend not to ever use ammonia products around aquariums. Hopefully this will help you.

There are a lot of "I heard"s popping up....

If you think the silicone is an issue, drain the tank, let cure for an additional week.(after rinsing until the windex foam is gone) Fill the tank after a week and get some tetras to test the toxicity. I can testify that silicone II will not harm fish in reasonable amounts. You may read otherwise, but it is hogwash and hearsay. I have a local friend with a background built with silicone II in a tank that houses WC and F1 Moba fronts and all is well and can provide numerous other reports of successful use of the product.. Proper cure time is key. Good luck.

Thanks jft for letting me know about the Polyfilter... will check it out. I think he's learned his lesson about the "cleaning" chemicals in the tank from here out... lol! He was pretty upset...

We ended up pulling the rock wall entirely apart b/c we found out several inner areas weren't dry including the silicone... probably didn't give everything enuf cure time, even after a week or so... we're basically picking up aquarium silicone today and re-piecing it all back together and then letting it sit for a while to fully cure... The way silicone II was leaking a "smoke" look into the water just wasn't a good sign... it probably would've been ok to use over a longer wait time but I feel safer at this point using something specifically geared to being under water & safe for fish...

There's nothing wrong with buying silicone specifically for aquarium use. If anything, its just extra insurance. Just to add to what I said earlier, I'd also remove all of the media from the wet dry and thoroughly rinse it. Since it is a wet/dry, there will be places that the foam has gotten to that the water will not get to, so it is imperative to ensure that any dried foam has been removed, preferably as soon as possible.

I'm at a big toss up b/c honestly the silicone II seems to be the major issue... in a couple areas it was leaking off a "smoke" look into the water

It sounds like the silicon hadn't cured properly, if that was the case, then you will get that 'smoke' illusion which is actually uncured silicon leaking into the water. This might be the cause of the foam.

Drain the tank completely. Let it dry out, remove all silicon. Resilicon the background or whatever you have added and let it cure for 48 hours. Better yet, one week. Clean with sponge and warm water only. Drain. Fill, drain fill drain a few times then turn everything on.

^^ Yes... I've just picked up 3 tubes of Aquarium Silicone & working on piecing the wall back together now... definitely more drying time...

I have had success in using AmQuel + in helping reduce ammonia spikes in tanks. It is the only water conditioner I use now also removes nitrate, and nitrites as well. Just a thought. Pics of this project would be great since you had to redo. Sounds like a neat background. Good Luck

5280... theirs photos & progress on my other post "Custom Rock Wall for 180 Gallon.." here in this set up & filtration section... it will still look the same, just re-did all the silicone on the entire thing... luckily it's not taking as long as expected... probably only put us back & day/day & 1/2...

Finally got it glued in a day ago... hoping to put water in tomorrow night and have better results... Ugh... hope it works this time...

I would seriously consider giving the silicone more time to cure...
