what you do is on the part that goes off on a 45...you put a ballvalve there. That is the extra flow you route to what ever you want. When you close the ballvalve it forces more water to go to your main tank...when you open it theres less water going to your tank...follow.

Ok here is what i got. I went to a local petstore and they had the mag pumps for 1/2 price. I ended up purchasing a mag 12 for like $80. I'm wondering if I made a mistake not purchasing the mag2400 for $100? I was a bit worried about the electricity usage of the mag 2400 at almost 300 watts. I was also worried a bit about current in the tank. I"m wanting the tank to be for frontosas. Should i use the mag 12 and/or an fx5 or just suck up the electricity bill and use the 2400 gallons an hour pump?

They didnt have anything in between? The 12 will be small and the 24 way to big. You can cut the flow back but thats a lot of flow to cut. It should also lessen the power bill. Also 100 for a 24 is a steal IMO. I would still get a 18 if they had it....

So if I cut the flow of the 2400 down then it will drop my power bill?

ah ok. I thought that the motor would be working just as hard wether it was pushing water or not?

Well on the external reeflo pumps it has a chart that shows it. I am only guessing its the same for the mags.

Anyone know?

So you think that the mag 12 will be too small? It has one of the best pressure rates at 4'.

At 4' the 12 has 1130 and the 18 has 1375. If your target is 1200 I think the 12 might not make it...Once you add in elbows and the things you will use for the return in the tank...might be less than that advertised 1130. With the 18 you have a little extra. If it were me id get the 18....but that is a pretty sweet sale you got and if they didnt have a 18 IDK if I would do the 12 or the 24. The 12 might be fine....just make sure you use 1.5" from the pump to the bulkheads where you split in two. Right now I only have 1 mag 18 running my 240 and it seems to be doing ok...I have another 18 that I will fire up once I mod the overflow covers on my GC tank. If I measured the flow right I am only getting arround 800 out of the mag 18. But I was not able to use 1.5" to the bulkhead. I used 1.25 and it drops to 1" for the bulkhead and then I have that T'ed to 2 nozzles in the tank.

I think that since I got such a good deal on the 12 I will just use that and add an FX5. I have a newer fx5 that isn't hooked up atm. I can always go bigger later if need be. I'm thinking that it might not hurt to have 2 filters, that way I'm ok if one dies while I'm at work or out of town. It would be nice though to spend 100 bucks and have 10x per hour flow through the wetdry. I need to make sure the current isn't too drastic though. For Frontosa to breed they need calmer water.
