One of the main reasons I want the tank in the basement is because I can only fit a 30g long on the stand the way I built it into the wall. Will a 30 g be enough? what about if there is power failure. I cant have any floods in my living room. If anyone can suggest how I can do it That would be great

Make sure you take pictures of this project!! search for DIY overflow and you can find some made out of PVC. You are going to need one hell of a pump, but filter maintenance should bea snap.
You've got me thinking about trying something similar. Hope everything works out well for you!!

didnt you do a PVC overflow in your tank rallys????????

Yep, but its drilled.

I have some other tanks that i would like to hook to a central filter in my basement....I'd like to see how his works out:)

Flooding doesnt need to be a problem in a traditional sump set-up, there are plenty of ways to ensure that flooding cant happen, it basically involves setting the plumbing up with correctly positioned syphon breaks and ensuring there is enough room in your sump for some back syphoned water.

I'm not very good with US gallons, what are the dimensions of a 30g long? I think thats about 115L? Which IMO wont be big enough for a sump on a 300G tank :(

Is there anyway you can maybe rig something above the tank? You will then use the pump to pump up to the filter and it will drain back to the main tank via gravity? you can use your 30g long as mini sump to house a submersible pump, but put the media in an above tank system. Above tank systems are common in Singapore and S.E. Asia for some reason. I'll see if I can find some references so you can check it out ;)

Dont let me put you off trying to do it the basement way, I'm just letting you know what I think, I'm sure its possible, I'm just not sure its worth it for a single 300g tank :(

the 18ft of head doesnt matter to much....if you have a decent psi coming from your pump....youll be losing almost 5psi per 10ft...your less that 9 psi at 18ft...should be good.

why sump in basement? heater gonna have to work harder too, keep in under the tank man!
I think he only has room for a 30 gallon sump under the tank.

Yeah I can only fit something like 36lx13x a little over 20 I don't know what to do except try it if it works great if not I'll have a 55g sump for sale and have to run 2 small ones. What if I ran 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 pvc instead of 1" to flow better or a smaller line out of the overflow and a bigger return?

I'm not exactly sure how it works but a bigger diameter return might increase the effective head pressure on your pump? You may just have to experiement and see what happens, but maybe be preparred with a back-up plan incase you hit a brick wall so to speak! ;)
