If you get a serious enough pump I really dont see why it wouldnt work. Ive seen cicrulating pumps for domestic hot water systems run 60 feet (head) pumping through 8" pipe. .......it can be done lol.

maybe look for one thats not specific to fishkeeping, and more along the lines of an industrial pump.

ETA: just found a pump that will pump 3000GPH @ 40 ft/head for $300....
IMO thats overkill but i'll keep searching

I have no doubt it can be done, I'm sure the aquaculture trade wouldnt think twice about doing it, but a pump capable of doing it will be pretty expensive to buy and also in electricity usage to run 24/7. :(

Also make sure the pump is rated to run 24/7.

worst case scenario on the pump i mentioned previously is 575 watts. Thats under FULL load, which in this case would never be seen. This pump would cycle that tank 10 times an hour, and wouldnt be TOO expensive to run or purchase, but like i said, thats overkill and I'm sure there is a smaller pump available that wouldnt cost as much to run.
Personally I like the idea of the filters being in the basement. I'm looking into doing it as well now. lol

Also, if you wire it for 230 volts (or 208 or 220, whatever is available) it will cut the amp load in half thus cutting the cost to operate in half (theoretically).

that would do the trick!! whats the price on that bad boy?

my electric bill is already $500 a month in the winter so a couple more bucks hopefully won't hurt.

You think it will make a drastic difference?

How much is it per KW/hour?
