whale wars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've only caught the show on a few times but I'm pretty familiar with sea shepard's practices, personally I find their efforts rather inspiring in a silly way. Will hurling stink bombs and being a general pain in the ass to the whaling ships work? Perhaps... if it draws so much attention to the backward thinking the Japanese have in regard to cetacean conservation.
Unfortunately I don't see the Japanese whalers (and dolphin...ers) practices changing on their own anytime soon unless economic and social pressure is imposed (boycott, decline of tourism etc via public education). Historically preservation of species diversity in that part of the world has been laughable at best.

Which part of the world,it seems that these whalers will go into any area and do what they want if they are allowed to?Sadly I have to agree with Ewurm's comments in post #108.

Well if all they did was write flyers and document things to submit to the government we wouldn't be discussing their actions on MFK. The thing with documentation is, how does one prove that they were at the said location? NIST traceable GPS units aren't really admisable for the purpose of maritime law. Then it becomes a question of he said she said and nothing is done. Their methods have more flair than substance but flair gets peoples attention.

To those who see these guys as echo terrorists, are you joking? If this was ALF that wouldn't be stink bombs it would be the real thing. They'd be hurling molatov cocktails and trying to buy old Russina ship killers. That's like saying the ASPCA is the same as PETA.

One thing everyone has to keep in mind ...It is a reality TV SHOW.. Don't think for a minute that the majority of the stuff you see happens often. We are shooting a reality show at my current job. It is called Live High Fly Low.... Already accepted in Germany from what I understand and Discoveryu might pick it up here in the states. Kind of neat because I get a little insight on how they go about filming and reinacting scenes and what not.

What they do is well, border line illegal. So it's pretty cool to see how things unfold at times. I stopped watching it a little while ago for my schedule but I did enjoy it.

As much as I think Japanese and Chinese culture is cool beans, I dislike whaling but these people seriously fail. They always put themselves in bad situations and I remember watching that show where they were trying to put several people on a small boat and they almost killed themselves. The next time I need a good laugh, I'll just watch these newbies on this joke of a program.

I have not read all the post but the people who are doing the whaling are protected by law. I know, it sucks but as long as they say their doing research it is ok for them to do it. I agree someone has to try to stop it but, you are not going to change a culture over night. These people know what they are doing and they know it is wrong. But the almighty dollar talks. It is hard not to racial discriminate over this but it is a large group of people who think this is alright to do. It makes me wonder what will happen when there are no more whales what other animal will go into their soup till it is all gone.

Japan... China... etc. IE, Rhino horn/Tiger penis sexual potentency elixirs are still en vouge as are whale burgers and sashimi... dunno, stuff like that gives me the impression organisms that are in peril are worth more in a package than in the environment to some people who reside there.
One of the Japanese justification for the whale harvest I believe is that a handful of tribes (for cultural/spiritiual/subsistance reasons) are allowed to take one migratory whale per yr in some parts of the world thus they should be allowed to as well. Only on a commercial scale and far off international waters with a floating factory.... how that compares with 5 guys in a caribou canoe using hand harpoon as they have for millions of years i dunno....
It probably is a whale fail for sea shepard but the bleeding heart in me likes to hope :)

I don't believe Sea Shepherd failed. As they mentioned on the show, it's an economical issue. By Sea Shepherd lowering the efficiency of the whalers, it costs the whalers money. The whalers can make hundreds of thousands, close to a million dollars, per whale. This past whaling season they whalers fell over 300 whales short of their quota. That's a lot of money lost for the whalers. This won't cause the whalers to stop immediately but over time it will not be economically viable.
The whalers do call it research and get around laws by calling it research. Yet, they are whaling in a whale sanctuary. I'm not sure in what kind of whale sanctuary it is legal to kill whales, whether for research or to sell as meat.

It's not just Japan that is responsible for killing whales. This show is very suggestive and leads people to think that Japan is the only country that kills whales. Most of this show is all about the members relationships, like any other reality show. Whale Wars is jam packed of heart stopping action such as, listening to people talk half of the show, watching people get into little inflatable boats only to return with sprained tail bones, busted eyes, and unsuccessful maneuvers performed by a non-profit driven crew with no prior experience in extreme activism, and watching the gruesome killing of the worlds most majestic creatures.

It is one thing to make this public to get whaling to stop, but it is another thing to be extreme to the point of stupidity. Japan has declared the members of the Sea Shepherd as terrorists and they are dealing with them as such. Sad to say Japan has followed the rules of putting "Research" on their boat to stay under the radar, and until it is changed to ban it completely regardless of research there is no stopping the ultimate demise of these animals from EVERY country in the world.

Even if you think that the Sea Sheppard failed, there is some amount of respect that must be given becasue if they didn't try to do anything to stop the whaleing, then nobody would. It's a shame that the Japs can put up a sign that says "RESEARCH" and they get away with killing whales to the point where they're close to becoming extinct. I was addicted to the show and I'm glad that the subject of illegal whaleing got publicity. I applaud the Sea Sheppard because they put a dent in the number of whales that would have been killed.
