Only way to prevent it maybe to search which heater it was to see if there were similiar cases. So which one was it?
 
I'm so sorry for your loss. I know how you feel. I had almost same incident earlier this year, forgot to plug my heater back after doing water change. Found out about it the next day, but water was already too cold. 21 clown loach ended up with ick, and die off in the next few days. I lost the entired tank, including 21 clown loach, plus a few other fish. I stil haven't bought a single loach since then, although I still have some other loach in other tank. Hope you get over the ill feeling soon.
 
WTF I have never seen a loss that bad in mFK before. no words can describe that. Sorry for ur loss. when you said 'i'm out" RU saying you are out of the whole fish hobby?
 
So sorry for your loss. (I'm hoping there's a fish heaven, and that all of our beloved/lost fish are happy, swimming some where wonderful!) The weekend is coming, things can only get better maybe, hang in there, Ok?
 
Always get a back up heater and check it daily. I always do it and able to raise some discus for a full life time. So sorry about ur loss... so sad.
