What are strong fish for the cycle?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i say just get feeders cheap and dosnet matter if die well yea and no depends on how u see it

I would use feeder comets cause they're cheap and whatever survives becomes food for the future inhabitants. Also tank water from other tanks or Fritz zyme 7 or 9 depending on type of tank helps break in the tank quicker.

Remember how most everone preaches that feeder fish carry parasites & disease? Any fish can carry parasites & disease but why use a fish that well know for it? Plus gold fish are very messy.

Most the other fish mentioned are very hardy, cheap (not as cheap as feeders...I know) and are not known for being disease carriers. Why put fish into your tank that is know for being problematic.

Why not float a bunch of bioballs or filter sponges in a well established tank (your LFS should do it for you especially if you buy the bioballs there) and just start with whatever fish you ACTUALLY want to keep?

What bacteria should I use to give the tank a jump start and a quicker cycle?? i added something my lfx gave me to my 75 and it cycled in like 4-5 weeks and all ammonia and nitrites never showed back up! So far at least!!

Bio- Spira from Marineland. It's a patented blend for cycling over night. The only one that works IME> :)

A product that cycled your aquarium in 4 to 5 weeks?

That's not very impressive, your tank should cycle with out the help of any bacterial supplements in 4 to 6.

I have never used commercial bacteria products, I just use sludge from an established filter dumped into the new one, even if you have no tanks going yourself you can usually find someone who does, I have hit up a local junior high and a public library before. Doing that and then adding a few fish (or one larger one) at a time means you can start adding your keeper fish on the second day. You could right away but I like double checking everything including heater settings before picking up the fish. Add a couple fish everyfew days until you are at the stocking level you want. Just avoid the really delicate ones like glass cats until the tank has been running a couple weeks.

Black skirt tetras and- believe it or not- skunk loaches- botia horas- are incredibly hardy. Otherwise... all the above. Except the Mollies: they're fragile.
Back in da old days, I just pissed into da tank!!!

I'd have to agree.

White Clouds are a good option.
