I belive Lupin may come back and tell you that apple snails won't make good tank mates because the betta will peck at it's eye stalks.

Did I just become more predictable?:uhoh: You're right though. It's basically trial and error. Some people had luck mixing both but I tried all my bettas and not one worked well. They tried to bite off the antennaes and before I knew it, some antennaes broke but thanks to their ability to regenerate, the antennaes have recovered but I cannot do the mix now. Constant stress will eventually kill the snails.

The other issue (assuming the betta worked with the snails) is calcium dosing. The fish becomes more prone to finrot once the pH and KH are increased. Nerites and apples require calcium dosing to avoid shell erosions. Severe shell erosions can leave them prone to damages that will also affect their overall health.

Asianmick, if you have the funds try and pick up a ten gallon, its not to much bigger (if space is the problem) and you can buy a new one for about $40-$50 with everything. Just avoid most of the plecos out there because most can end up being 2' long! Im gonna have to agree with others on shrimp. I had ghost shrimp in a community with my male betta and they cleaned up the substrate great!

There is not a single pleco that would suit living in a 10gallon tank, and certainly not with a betta. 10 gallon, however, will give him the opportunity to stock a small shoal of corys with his betta...and guess what, fully stocked once more!

I wrote that wrong and didn't fully explain what i meant. I was steering him away from getting a pleco. I suggested a 10 gallon because it is perfect for what he wants. His betta and a cleaner (or a few).
