What are the best freshwater snail eaters?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just so you know assassin snails will also bread in tank and will consume left over food as well as other snails but typically which ever is easier to obtain. They dont breed as fast as "pest" snails but do and will breed.

Lots of fish will eat snail eggs so will other types of snails. Do you have more then 1 snail type in the tank? I breed snails for food for my puffer. I learned the hard way that you really dont want to mix snail types if you are trying to breed them. I was wondering why my ramshorns were not multipling as fast as they used to. I had put bladder snails in with them and the bladder snails were eating the ramshorn eggs and the same was true the other way. Then I also somehow allowed an mts in with my bladder snail colony same issue there too. Mts are completely useless to me they are to hard for the puffer.

I am a real beginner (my 11yr old is the pro!!) so not sure if I have more than 1 type - he has told me loaches (which we are planning on getting) and puffers (which he said he does not want to get since they take clams or special food to keep their teeth 'trimmed') are good snail controls so we may start with the loaches and assassins - no plans to breed snails. yet....:)

It looks like a bladder snail and if it has thin tentacles, that is probably correct.

Assassin snails would do well to help control them but it will take a few months.

You can use zucchini slice stuck on a fork and dangle it on a piece of fishing line or string so you can retrieve it without sticking your hand in the tank.

See if your local fish store (LFS) is interested in taking them from you or knows of a customer that might be interested in getting some to feed their fish.

Avoid disposing of live unwanted snails in the trash in case some live. The usual recommendation is to crush the snail shell with a hammer and freeze for awhile to be sure they are dead. Food storage bags work great for both crushing them and disposal.
