what are the easiest cichlids to breed besides convicts??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Havent decided yet because well heres my story i have three tanks running right now and i need a bigger one my biggest tank is a 60 gallon i have two oscars in them and a pleco.........my second tank is a 55 gallon tank i have two jds and two 2" plecos.....my other tank is a (growout)20 gallon long i have two firemouths in there...i also have two 10 gallons not being used at all.......and as you can see some of these are a little to bigg for these tanks so yep.......thats my story

Back to my topic i guess i going to get convicts to breed because well i just realize that i have never feed my cichlids any live food or at least i dont remember when the last time that was.....so i am going to breed convicts and have them provide food for my cichlids:D

What do you think?????P.S dont know what size tank.......

Well, before you get any more fish I recommend you find your bigger tank. Then you could move the oscars to the bigger tank, the JD's to the 60, the FM's to the 55 and then worry about the smaller tanks. You could keep a breeding pair of JD's in a 60 no problem. A pair of firemouths would be great in a 55 and maybe you can set it up so that later on down the line you throw in a pair of cons or HRP's as well.
Hell, your new tank can be so much more spacious you could throw everything in there and free up your 60, 55 and 20 long. But that's wishful thinking. ;)
How big are your JD's? Have you been able to sex them?

My old Cuban cichlids (now living with Bolty) bred every 3/4 weeks without fail. They were in a 125g and tank mates ranged from breeding cons, Salvini, Nics, Oscar and Silver Dollars (not all at the same time). Had some luck with kribensis as well but they were only churning them out every 6/7 weeks.

Yes one is about 5.5-6 inches and the other is 4-4.5 inches.
Both females, yep i thought i had a pair for sure but i realized they both had blue dark gills and well they are girls and the big one chases the small one to the top corner which is sad really

Once you get your tank situations figured out why not try trading one of your females for a male? :)

maybe but idont know i grown to attach to them but wait never mind i rather breed them and get others ....Okkk....

When you upgrade your fish...a 20long makes a great breeder tank for convicts. Usually you can purchase some subadults from a LFS and sex them yourself and get a pair or get 4or5 of various sizes and youll be almost assured of getting a pair as well :) The reason I asked if you wanted to breed them for profit or for feeders really I guess to me determins which fish you gear your time toward breeding. I wouldnt want to breed a little more difficult fish that I could make a fairly decent account at my LFS with to use them as feeders. Convicts are a great fish to learn to breed cichlids on...very easy to breed and youll be assured of having plenty of feeders since they do produce fairly decent sized broods. Sadly if you take them to a LFS you probably wont get much more than a quarter for a young specimine tho.

I was thinking of buying a pair adults and putting them in my 55g,observe for awhile. When they gett in breeding stage,i'LL divide the tank...after frys are Free swimming move them to 10g.I have two10gs.I might just make them for feeders...any ?,concerns about my plan?
