Podocemis expansa I think is the amazon river turtle. Not sure if they're bigger than ally snappers or if the ally counts as it's barely more than fully aquatic.

As for largest varanid in the pet trade that's up for debate. On the one hand the croc monitor (Varanus salvadorii) is reputed to be the longest monitor, even rivalling the Komodo in length. Not sure what the longest confirmed croc is though. On the other hand, an adult water monitor (Varanus salvator) while maybe not quite as long as the arboreal croc monitor will certainly be bigger/heavier. Sort of the same issues you have with the "biggest snake" debate...retic in length, green anaconda in weight.

I'm just going to toss this in as well. Since its more rare to find a small monitor than a huge one. What is the smallest varanid?

Definitely!!!! I've seen some in aquariums that weigh over 200lbs. and can drag a pretty muscular man into the water with it.

And yes you are rigth they never were. They originaly were hibrids betheewn vitticeps and barbata but today they are praticly 100% vitticeps but still a litle barbata in them
