what are the tropical temp snakeheads?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi,

not all snakeheads come from asia, there are three african species.
and from the asian species, some live in really highh altitude in small streams, for them 20°c is really the upper level of the temperatire range

Yes you are right, some do come from Africa. And they do thrive in cooler waters. But most prefer warm tropical waters.

Hi,

the african snakeheads are all truely tropical, a lot of the asian are subtropical,
best tropical for beginners are gachua/limbata and orientalis.

Hi,

nice fishbase quote, but fishbase does not know everything, and in the case of channa its surely often very wrong !!

Channa obscura

correctly it is Parachanna, otherwise tropical is correct!

Tropical =unsure, cause its not really known that this species really exists, no one living has ever seen them !!
Asia: India and Bhutan.

its not really known that this species really exists, a drawing leads to the conclusion its a misidentification of C. aurantimaculata, which truely are subtropical !! Otherwise it could be a misidentificated gachua, or a gachua near species. The region northern India and Bhutan is therefor a precise identification for subtropical fish from high altitude.

Channa asiatica
cornloh;4572034; said:
Tropical=> false
Yangtze River basin in central China, Taiwan, Hainan Island to the Red River basin of northern Viet Nam

Also found in higher altitude, was the first snakehead to be described scientifically and one of the first bred in aquaria, in unheated, as all aquaria were unheated in the early years ofth e20th century. I keep mine at a raneg between 10°c and 25°C, they breed at 20 to 22°C therefor NOT tropical, they are subtropicals.!!

cornloh;4572034; said:
Channa aurantimaculata
cornloh;4572034; said:
Tropical => false
Asia : India

From northwestern Assam, high altitude, breeding only after lowering temperature and less food
aurantimaculata are subtropical

Channa bankanensis
Tropical => true
Asia: Indonesia and Malaysia

Channa baramensis
Tropical=> true
Asia: Malaysia.

Channa barca
Subtropical=> true
Asia: India and Bangladesh.

cornloh;4572034; said:
Channa bleheri
cornloh;4572034; said:
Tropical=>false
Asia: India.

this is sadly offten proclaimed, but its truely false, NO one breeds bleheri when they are kept in tropical temps all their live, they often die from nasty bacterial infections.
bleheri are subtropical
The often sold as "blue bleheri" is a totally different yet undescribed species, and they are subtropical, too !!

Channa burmanica
Tropical=> not really sure, depends on which altitude they are found
Asia: Myanmar.

Channa cyanospilos
Tropical =true, due to the range they are found, but dont come into aquaria (sadly)
Asia: Sumatra, Indonesia.

Channa diplogramma
Tropical=true
Asia: Cochin, Malabar coast, India.

Channa gachua
Tropical; 22°C - 26°C => mostly true, some variants are subtropicals but most gachua/limbata er tropicals
Asia: Sri Lanka to the Mekong (Xe Bangfai and Nam Theun basins) and Bali, Indonesia. Also Maharashtra, India

Channa harcourtbutleri
Tropical should be true, but the so called "glaser-harcourtbitleri"which could be an undescriebed species are subtropical
Asia: Myanmar.

Channa lucia
Tropical; 22°C - 26°C => true
Asia: Thailand to Indonesia

Channa maculata
Tropical AND subtropical due to the wide range they come from, and aquarists report they stand really cold water
Asia: Japan, southern China, Viet Nam, Taiwan and the Philippines.

Channa marulia
Tropical; 24°C - 28°C =>true
Asia: India to China, south to Thailand and Cambodia and Pakistan

Channa marulioides
Tropical=>true
Asia: Indonesia and Malaysia.

Channa marulius
Tropical; 24°C - 28°C its the same species as C marulia, so its true tropical
Asia: India to China, south to Thailand and Cambodia and Pakistan

Channa melanoptera
Tropical=>true
Asia: Indonesia (Sumatra and Borneo).

Channa melasoma
Tropical=>true
Asia: Mekong in Thailand to Indonesia and the Philippines

Channa micropeltes
Tropical; 25°C - 28°C =>true
Asia: Mekong and Chao Phraya basins; the Malay Peninsula, and the islands of Sumatra and Borneo

Channa nox
Subtropical => true, same range as asiatica
Asia: China.

Channa orientalis
Tropical; 23°C - 26°C =>true
Asia: Afghanistan and Baluchistan southward to Sri Lanka and eastward to Indonesia

Channa ornatipinnis
Tropical => false, found in high altitude, low water temperatures
Asia: Waloun Chaung in Rakhine State, Myanmar

Channa panaw
Tropical =>trues
Asia: known only from the Irrawaddy and Sittang river basins in Myanmar.

Channa pleurophthalma
Tropical => trues
Asia: Sumatra in Indonesia and Borneo.

Channa pulchra
Tropical=> false, found in high altitude, low water temperatures
Asia: headwaters of Kyeinthali Chaung in Rakhine State, Myanmar

Channa punctata
Tropical; 22°C - 28°C widely distributed species,found in tropical and subtropical conditions
Asia: Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Yunnan in China.

Channa stewartii
Tropical=> false, found in high altitude, low water temperatures amongst this species there are variants/subspecies/species that are really cold water channa, like the sp. "true blue"
Asia: Eastern Himalaya (India and Nepal).=> indicator for suntropical

Channa striata
Tropical=>true
Asia: Pakistan to Thailand and south China.

Channa sp. five stripe =>subtropical
Channa sp. lipor =>subtropical
Channa sp. mimetic pulchra =>subtropical

I dont wanna count which are more subtropical or tropicals, but sadly a lot of channa that are truely subtropical are kept wrong in too warm aquaria, which is really not good for them. Only few scientists are affiliated with channa, so the information of hobbyists is often the only thing you can find on some species, therefor you should ask the people who know (e.g. P. Antler who has kept and bred loads of channa) and dont trust old listings that are not maintained well.

Cheers and lots of Channafun

Brucki, OK, so most channas are tropical. You have pointed it out too (I also didn't bother counting). Thats what the thread starter was asking. And please don't demean fishbase. Most hobbyist like using it. If you people are so on about channas, you should contribute to fishbase sincerely. Thats all I have to say. Hey I don't really even like channas!! :)
