To answer the question... I feed or strive for a 40/60 diet for all my fish comprised of a quality pellet ( NLS mainly) and live/whole foods depending on the species.. this includes live feeders fish/nightcrawlers/crawfish/vegetables and pretty much anything and everything my pets might have encountered in the wild... imo an Oscar should never be fed live feeder fish, but Nightcrawlers are an excellet live food to add to your fishes diet. Do abit more research about foods here ( check out the sticky reguarding live foods) and you'll find good info reguardless if you decide to add live/frozen to your pets diet along with his pellets.

Would you like some pictures of my spectacular fish Alan? ;)

It's a never ending debate. But whether RD. says it or not, facts are facts. NLS has more efficient nutrients that a fish can consume, digest, ingest and actually "use". Especially for long term health.

I was more stating to the OP that the preservative in question isn't as bad as the article states - presently speaking.

I try to use natural food as much as possible. Once a fish reaches a certain size I will stuff their food with hikari sinking carnivore pellets. I feed talapia fillets, black tiger shrimp, silversides, and scallops. All of these I will stuff for the larger fish.

I feed Hikari as a staple and feeders as an accidental substitute. I feed hikari floating carni-sticks and sinking carnivore pellets. I have a tin of NLS but I dont feed it cause my fish cant eat it due to how hard it is. While you guys may care about the colour of your fish I really could careless cause all my fish are brown black and grey.

The same way that Vitamin A does.

Using data from studies where excessive amounts of any substance are used on animals, certainly doesn't prove that the substance is in the least bit harmful when used at appropriate or approved levels. The problem lies in the fact that you seldom see ALL the facts & data, only those snippets that support the view of those posting the information.

I can turn this statement right around and say the same exact thing - You seldom see all the facts and data and only the snippets that support the view of those (NLS) posting the information. Where are these studies reporting that Ethoxyquin works the same way Vitamin A does? Are there studies Actual studies showing that ethoxyquin is harmless? And if so, in what amounts? And if there is an acceptable amount, why is the amount not listed on the ingredients lists?

I'll concede that Ethoxyquins effects must be either one of two things: dose is minimal. Even in the presence of tumors, and (theoretical) cancer it takes years for these symptoms to develop OR we simply don't keep our fish alive long enough for the effects to take hold. Lets face it, even among the informed few can say that Nitrate toxicity is not a factor in their fishes longevity. At the moment I'm inclined to lean towards the latter.

I'll say it again, find me a reputable unbiased source, study that proves that Ethoxyquin improves fish health.

Lets not get too out of hand here guys I'd like to keep to informed posts and questions. I'm not looking for jabs or undertone in your posts. I actually really want to know... none of you think that Ethoxyquin is a threat? Not even a little?

Remember, just because a fish is colorful and beautiful doesn't mean that it's immune to cancer or liver disease.
