What are your opinions about hybrid cichlids?

I'm not a big fan of hybrids, but I'm not all fish police about them either. In fact, I would have to plead guilty to admiring an occasional hybrid or two. Specifically, red texas cichlids and I recently saw a fader FH that blew my mind at a local petstore.

I would never own one, myself. A few of them do look relatively nice, but when you consider the number of issues presented to the hobby by the intentional hybridization of cichlids, it is not worth it.

I don't think I'll ever own one. I'll just at others pics. But as others have said... to each his own. I can't figure out the appeal of plenty of purebred fish, much like I"m sure others can't figure why I would like some fish I like. There's room for all of our tastes in this hobby at the end of the day.

I agree with you rich. It really is to each his own at the end of the day. Everyone can argue till kingdom come either side of the subject but personally i think that the problem is not the hybrids but the irresponsibility of some people selling them off as something that their not just to make a few bucks. If only the world was "honest" lol. I personally love some of the FH ive seen and some other hybrids and may even try my hand at breeding a few in my lifetime but i will never sell them or even give them away to the unknowing as its just not responsible to do so. =) Just thought i'd add my 2 cents.

I can't stand BP or FH. I think deformed fish bother me much more than the hybrid aspect, I detest the breeding for deformities such as short balloon bodies. I also hate when hybrids are passed off as a particular species and not identified as hybrids. I do own a couple of OB peacocks and 2 male peacocks that are obvious hybrids (a dragonsblood and one other of unknown parentage). The males are in an all male tank so they won't be breeding and OBs are such known hybrids that I do not worry that any fry I sell could ever be passed as anything but OB.

LAWL @ People who say all FH's are just basically Trimacs. Clearly, you need to educate yourself a bit more. I like FH's. Never keeping them again though since I've grown bored of them. They are truly nice fish. As for you "purists", Better check those Guppies, Midevils, Discus, Angelfish and all those other hybridized fish you see in the market.

As for my opinion, Hybrids "destroying" the hobby is better than those people that are always seeking wild caught fish. Now if you wanna talk about where the real damage is done, look into that LOL. And to each their own. I learn to appreciate whatever fish there are. I do have preferences, but I'm not going to hate a fish LOL. Afterall, what did the fish do to me? Live? These threads never end well...

There are nothing wrong with Hybrids...they are equally beautiful. Even with other species of animals: dogs and even people.

Actually most humans are hybrids.

LOL, even cars nowadays.

I'm not going address anything anyone else has said in this thread, just going to state my own opinion.

I don't like that it's hard to get a pure trimac. However, I don't see any problem with someone breeding "high quality" hybrids and selling them as such. The important thing is to try as much as possible to keep fish labeled properly and breed responsibly.
