What are your overrated foods for fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Quite a long time ago, one LFS used to sell mosquito larvae. I won't explain.

When I was a youngster, I wanted to try collecting and freezing mosquito wrigglers in summer for winter use.

My mother put a halt to that particular line of experimentation in short order. I was allotted a couple of freezer baskets in the basement chest freezer, and they were nicely stocked with frozen fish, frogs, mayflies, etc...but for some strange reason she decided to draw the line at mosquito wrigglers. Weird.

Off the top of my head, absolutely any fish food made by Hikari. I genuinely don't know why I am constantly seeing it recommended as a good food over and over on this site - does no one actually READ the ingredient labels of their food, do they just hear someone say it's good and then pass that info along blindly? Genuine question :P

Any food Hikari makes is complete and utter garbage and not something I would ever feed any of my fish.

As someone that’s still very much a novice fishkeeper, I got sucked into the “Hikari hype” really early on. I probably saw it on YouTube or other places online. It’s a good thing my fish refused to eat the stuff. I know most pellets need some kind of filler ingredient but I mean jeez it’s a little ridiculous. I think I’ll be sticking to my Northfin and NLS.

To be fair...I feed Hikari Massivore to a couple of predatory fish I own; the ingredients list and nutrient breakdown are not as good as some foods, but much better than many others. I definitely prefer Northfin large carnivore pellets, but I like to buy locally and Massivore is usually my only choice. It seems to improve colour in my fish as well.

Does it smell yummy? Well...not to me...but the fish seem to enjoy it, so I'll give them my share. It's fish food, not french pastry. I expect it to smell like fish food; the comments I have heard and read about the unbearable stink are a little silly, IMHO. The last time I bought some another customer in the LFS started on a tirade about the odour; she said that the stink lasted all day in the fishroom when she used it. When I use it, the time interval between opening the jar and watching the last pellet disappear into a fish's maw is usually about 5 seconds, tops. I can live with that.

Haven’t ever used or smelled massivore. Is it really that potent? I’m imagining it would smell like a really strong dog treat. Probably way off lol.

I used to think, quite naively, that fish food was fish food, the manufacturer's know what they're doing, and so I put my trust in them. At that point in my fish keeping life I fed quite a lot of various hikari. My fish nailed the stuff, always, and seemed healthy enough. My water was never cloudy, there were no funny smells. Happy days.

It wasn't until I came on here and started reading through a lot of RD's posts on nutrition that I realised that you really should take note of the ingredients lists on the packaging. This I did, and compared to some of the premium brands hikari was extremely poor in comparison.

I didn't stop feeding hikari immediately, I just eased off over a period of time, and bought some NLS to compensate, which was extremely costly compared to hikari. The long term plan at the time was to eventually switch exclusively to NLS. However, my long term plan didn't materialise, and so today I still feed a mix of NLS and hikari, and to be truthful I think i'll leave it that way.

In the current economic climate we live in a lot of hobbyists will thank their lucky stars that we have reasonably priced hikari available. I'm just about to fork out about £90.00 on a 2kg tub of NLS, which, for fish food, is shocking!!!
