I used to feed my own mixture of several food brands. I don't know why, think I just bought a bunch and wanted to see what the fish liked best. Well, i started to notice my big blue acara would only eat the Hikari carnivore pellets for whatever reason. That blue acara remains the only fish I've ever kept to develop bloat suddenly and die. Scientifically conclusive? Not really. Enough for me to avoid Hikari? Yep.
I'm a big fan of nls now and feed my tanks only the nls thera and probiotics blends. The fish are nuts about it and I've seen good results thus far.
I've primarily fed my fish NLS & Omega One products and found them to be fine. Not much difference between them regarding fish color & health benefits.
I'm not a big fan of Hikari products either. I bought Hikari Cichlid gold pellets in a pinch. It wasn't readily accepted by the fish. I never tried it again.
During the pandemic finding the higher quality fish foods was very difficult in my area. Even Tetra foods weren't plentiful, but were available.
I started using the old standbys, Tetra Min & Tetra Cichlid Sticks. Surprisingly the fish remain colorful & healthy. I guess maybe some of the old time food products most of us have abandoned, aren't so bad.
The problem is that when compared to the all singing and all dancing NLS type foods, then some of the "old time food products" do actually look bad! even though they may be ok, and still do a job for you at a reasonable price.
I don't think it's necessarily so that Hikari is complete s**t, it's just that NLS is so good, lol.
My convicts and septemfasciata don't know how to eat crickets, but strangely my nanolutea, which are supposed to be one of the most herbivorous of the family, love them. Brine shrimp is overrated. I don't really have anything against any prepared food brands other than the fact that hikari and NLS smell like ass. NLS is also pretty pricey, but it's a good food.
