What baits have been working for bass?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I fish primarily with smaller tackle so alot of you may hate my reccomendations, but I love it and it works for me.

Go to your local fly fishing supply store ask for top water poppers, walmart carries the betts branded ones. fish these with a jerking retrieve about 2-3 feet behind a weighted bobber. fish them in the morning or evening when the flies are landing on the top of the water.

1/8-1/4 oz light diving minnow cranks, my fav are strike king, dunno why just seems to work better than the other brands in the lakes near me.

1/8 oz jig heads with 2" mister twister tails. Absolutely kill.

As for live a small hunk of night crawler rigged on a minnow hook has worked well and keeps the over abundant panfish from stripping your bait every two seconds.

Spinners, buzz, and moss bosses dont really work for me. Then again im talking about the lakes near me.

ITs all about where your at, the weather, and your fishing experience. If something doesnt work for you try something else until you find what does. Im in the midwest and the weather has sucked it lately.

I don't know if its the same at your place but ZOOM BAIT WHITE PEARL color has been working awesome here in CALIFORNIA. Just jerk it and BOOM.

Same here in Illinois and also if the fish are "shortstriking" you need to get a stinger hook on your spinner baits, and I have had a ton of luck this year using wacky rigged worms and rooster tails .

The whole trick to fishing is to vary your retreive and action of the lure to give the fish what it wants at that particular time.

If the water is cold make a slow presentation if its warm and the bass are active and you can see them chasing bait fish then you might want to speed your presentation up ... just adapt to what the situation calls for

where are you fishin in la ?
i would go with a rogue or some sort of top water ( buzzbait, spro frog, ribbit, popper) try em all. also flukes. they are prob spawning around there so maybe some hollow body swim baits, money minnows in the blue gill work pretty well. those are prob your best bet this time of year.
if there is some cover around try pitching to that with an 1/8 th ounce texas rig witha zoom baby brush hog in either watermelon red or watermelon candy red
good luck

It depends on what body of water you are fishing....deeper lakes require deeper diving baits and shallow lakes are more prone to top water bites along with shoreline bass hanging around reeds.Although top waters are really entertaining to fish and very exciting your strike zone is very limited and hook up ratio is much lower...My preference for cali lakes are lighter colored cranks depending on water clarity spinner baits color varies just as the cranks do. And fishing plastic worms or lizards the key to this is to find good hang out territory for bass like rock piles cliffs and reeds then match the forage around the lake to let that determine the color or shape of worm that you are using...And yes i agree zoom brush hawg awesome bait for prespawn:D

WTH r u smoking??? at that pond in santa cruz a guy i know caught a 9lber there on anchovie as well as a 20lb channel cat. It also works for striped bass. And the only largemouth bass ive ever caught was on anchovie. as for lures worms seem to work good by tullies
