what can cause ammonia spikes???

i bow to you wisdom wyld fya my biggest tank 6x2x2 at the moment with fluval fx5 on the box of the bio balls it says one year replace that was my thinking plz enligthen me
 
Yeah never change the biomedia it will throw ur tank into a cycle or at a minimum a mini cycle if its dirty just rinse it in TANK water , the female con wasn't decomposed at all looks like she just died a few hours b4 i found her ... al see'm to be back to normal but im still curious what caused this , could have been the con but .... dunno

The reason manufacturers recomend periodic bio-media replacement is to.....

SELL you more media.

YES bio-media can become clogged over time but a simple vigerious rince in used tank water (no more than 1/4 of the media at a time) will cure that problem.

They do that to make more money. Bio-media doesn't need to be replaced, just periodically rinsed in tank water.
