hi, i am wondering what kind of larger fish i can breed in a 55gal quarium, i have sucessfully bred i.d sharks, plecos, golfish, gppies, and platies but i am lokoking for a nice looking fish that is a egg layer to breed in my 55gal. tank. i have 3 tiger oscars and 2 plecos in my 55gal. right nowbt am hinking of getting rid of them. any suggestions are welcome.

no shot of breeding oscars in that tank... and it will be way to small for them anyway. are you looking for ca/sa cichlids? or africans? you could get convicts or firemouths or maybe yellow labs or something of that nature

I would not put id sharks or goldfish (except fantails) in a 55 gallon for a long time.
if you are looking for a large fish, you may want a larger tank, but it depends on your definition of large really.
You have to ask yourself, what type of fish are you looking for? Cichlids, catfish, etc
Then it can be narrowed from there.
Also, what is available in your area, that places a huge part of it.
I think angels would be neat to breed. Not that hard really, they get a decent size as well. They are very graceful.

i bred i.d's in a 1300 gal. aquarium, and i am looking for a agressive fish arround 7-10inches in length my oscars are 12,7,9inchs long ive had them each since they were small i do water changes once a week, i have a filter for a 300gal. aquarium so ifthere messy i can still keep up wih the pollution, i want something that has the similrities of a shark or a fish with teeth prefferably.

how wide is your 55? every 55 i have seen is only 12 inches wide and I would not want to put a fish that was more than 6 inches long max in there for space reasons. Filtration will certainly help for waste, but not dimensions.

you should barely have 2 oscars in a 55G..but if you get rid of them try out convicts there easy to breed so are firemouths..

my tank is 4ftx1ftx1.5ft and i thought the oscars were happy they are active they let me pet them and everything but they clean off this pice of slate i got in my tank. and i will look into the firemouths i tried convicts before but didnt have any luck.

that must be difficult on your 12 inch oscar.....12 inches long in a tank that is only 12 inches wide....not very fun.

But yes, I would suggest finding the oscars and plecos are larger home and trying something smaller like firemouths or convicts. Convicts bred like no tomorrow.
A lot of people know keep them in rubbermaid containers even with a heater and filter and they breed readily.

If you are going to do something that breeds rapidly, make sure you have homes for the offspring or something that will eat the offspring.

Best of luck.

my lfs will buy any fry that i produce even if it was say a golliath tiger fish she would still buy the fry off of me. my friend from school told m tat there is a snakehead species that gets to 9inches long full length. would that be a good idea? and is it odd that my tiger oscars all grew to their large sizes in a 55gal.?
