You can breed jack dempseys, jaguar( my friend does this and they are just fine and have plenty of room, about a foot each), green terrors, convicts, firemouths, and texas cichlids if any of those interest you.

all of those get way too big for a 55gallon.... :grinno:

This is NOT good advice. Do NOT breed Jags in a 55Gal. That is pure torture. Smallest tank I would put 1 Jag in would be a 125Gal. Does 18-20" not mean anything to your friend? And if he has had them in there for a while they are probably stunted and thats why they are only 12"

I would probably slap my LFS silly and never do business there again if she told me that she could get snakeheads... those things are detrimental to your local ecosystems if they escape and being that they are similar to lung fish in the fact they can travel over land for several days it doesn't matter if there is water right outside your house. They aren't cool to raise either, they are like the cockroach of fish, a nuisance that is hard to exterminate and no one wants them around. Being of a native stock, I sir find your desire to have snakeheads in bad taste.

Sorry have to get my 2 cents off my chest.
