What can i do to make my pond look better?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Good job! I'm sure more members will chime in with ideas. Keep us updated.

Stellar job for 14. If it were me I would have dub the hole so the edges were straight up and down. That way the pond liner is less visable and it would make it easier to give it a more natural look w/ the rocks on the edge. ANd of course plants.

If it were me Id stock it full of fancy guppies to use as feeders. Or like you said...fancy gold fish.

thanks all for the feedback!

sorry to derail, but how do you plug in the pump/filter? do you just use extension cords?
we had a water proof built outlet installed ill get some pics of that :) but for my other ponds i do use extension cords.

If i were you id take it all apart and make it about 10x bigger. Get rid of those bricks and use flat sandstone and create a lip over the edge of the pond. Change the waterfall into a bigger stone waterfall. Then get urself some lilly pads and water hyacinths to put in there as vegetaion. The hyacinths have nice purple and blue flowers. Then get urself a nice sized RTC to put in that baby.

Haha i mean thats what id do. Im about to start my RTC pond soon.

Thats what im about to sta
i would make it bigger but since this is my show pond in the garden am limited as my moms stupied roses and stuff are in the way when i dig. am lucky i got it this big as she almost fainted when i took out like only 2 of the rose plants...orginaly i was going to do sandstones but in my area there were none! i will make it a bigger stone waterfall tho! i have loads of extra river stones. plan on picking some up this weekend :) i might just do an rtc just might i do have my pond heaters as this used to be a bala shark pond. whats the lowest comturable temp for a full grown rtc? i have a empty 98"x98" pond but i really would like to go saltwater on that one.

I would add some floating plants and a branchy piece of driftwood or two. I also like redtail's idea top switch out bricks with natural stone
Driftwood look nice! but where?

tanks for the feedback! what you mean by dub hole? get rid of the step you mean?

i think that was a typo. he probably meant to say "dug" instead of "dub".

edit, posted as soon as you did lol

OH! the only reason am not putting rocks on the step is cause the turtle will just knock it down. anyone know where to get bass or trout in Los Angles ?

Okay, a few things:

  • If I were you, I would drain it and make the sides not quite so steep in order to be able to have rocks and gravel/sand over them to cover up the liner without having to worry about them falling over and/or ending up at the bottom. Having a more gradual slope will also be more ideal for the turtle since it will want to exit the pond sometimes.
  • Speaking of the turtle, put a fence around some of the grass surrounding the pond to prevent it from wandering off. Be sure to bury the fence at least a foot or two underground with the underground portion slanting towards the inside; this underground portion is meant to prevent the turtle from digging out.
  • As others have said, replace the bricks/concrete slabs with natural stone for a better look; you can use them to make a nice path to the pond. Also, add a large piece of driftwood that an adult turtle will be able to climb up on to use for basking purposes. Other than that, add a few plants with some being floaters, submerged, and a couple attached to the underwater part of the driftwood, and add a few fish that you will not mind disappearing should the turtle see them as food and you'll be golden.
