Previously I used eheim classic canisters as backups to sumps. Since the Fluval fx5 was released I have replaced all of the eheims with fx5's. I run 7 xfx5's on 4 different tanks as backups. Price vs performance vs maintenance vs running cost, the fx5 is a good package.

I've only ever used Fluval canisters. My first was a 403 years ago and more recently a 205 and Fx5. i read a review comparing the Ehiem and the Fluval Fx5 and considered going for the Ehiem as it was supposed to be a little better. (according to the review)

I found an Fx5 for $177. The Ehiem 2078 was $371. The review mentioned the lesser enery draw of the Ehiem so I still hadn't discounted it. Once I did the math, it was about $42/year to run the Fx5 and $26/year for the 2078. I didn't think that was enough of a savings to overcome the cost difference and the fact that I was familiar with Fluval.

It's on my 125 and so far so good.

When I was switching to canisters everyone gave high praises to eheim, fluval, and rena, so I bought 1 eheim 2080, 1 fx5, 1 xp3, and an xp4. They all seem to work pretty well.

I've got a Rena XP3 (been using it for 8yrs)
It's starting to show its age and the plastic fittings near the spraybar is starting to crack and get brittle.

Have replaced it with an Eheim Classic 600 (2217) and am also setting up
an Eheim 2228 as well

I am running 3 Marineland C360 on my 125. One is 5 years old and the other 2 are just under 5 months. All have been running great with no issues.
