At this time I have 4 Fluval 405's running, these are a great filter for the money you can buy a 405 for 150.00 or the FX5 for 230.00

i have two magnum 350 and one pen plax cascade 1500 with inline heater have had all three for about 3 yrs and have had no prob with any only thing i dislike about the magnums it that if not purged correctly will make alot of noise with water falling other than that as long as change media periodically they are great cascade dont much care for to much by pass dont pick up debri worth a hoot imo

Years ago (mid 80ies) I used to run a Fluval canister (maybe 403?) on a 250l tank. Was pretty happy with it, although it had it's quirks. Couldn't afford an Eheim at the time!

More recently I am running all Eheims in my tanks. Several 2252 in the tanks, one or two Biopowers as well. On the 1400l tank I have a system of three Eheim 2260 buckets chained in series and full of Siporax. An Eheim 1262 pump on the last bucket drives the train. On the suction side in the tank I have twin Eheim prefilters, each on it''s own fork of tubing (so four prefilter modules in total). Turned out that Eheim installation set T-junction fits perfectly into a 25/34mm suction tube. From there, a couple of Installation set 90 degree angles and modular straight tubes, then the prefilters. The system has been up and running for a month now, so no long-term experiences yet. I am expecting near-infinite maintenance intervals :-D

For an upcoming 400l tank I am going to set up a wet/dry Eheim 2229 plus an Eheim 2252 to pick up particles.

Edit: I will never (as in NEVER freaking EVER) buy a Chinese brand filter. I strongly dislike reverse engineering, copying and industrial/intellectual theft. And feel strongly about ethical use of workforce, environmentally sound industry and condemn ethnical cleansing.

Wow a blast from the past. This thread is alive!!!!!
I ended my canister filter period years ago. I have one main sump that services all my tanks now. I do like canister filters. They work and don’t take up much space. But maintenance, especially under the tank, sucks. I ended up plumbing my canister filters to the side of the tank just to make it easier to open them. Then I moved away from them I n favor of a large sump system.

Yeah, I'm known for thread necromancy in other forums as well :-D

Sumps seem to be great for bigger tanks. However, my big tank came with a superb, custom made stand that really does not allow a sump. So a system of canisters is clearly the best (only) way to go.

For the other tanks...well, the wife does have some say in these matters...after sweet-talking another tank into the home, one has tho take caution and not overdo it by proposing sumps! Choose your battles :-D

I ran 2x FX4s for two years and changed them out recently for AC110s due to the pita maintenance. I can clean all 5 of my running ACs in the same time/effort it took to clean a single FX4.

i still have 3 Rena Filstars running (two XP3s and an XP4) from 2007 going.

Sucks that they were bought out, rebranded, made crappier and are now discontinued...???

Who bought Rena out and what are they called now?

I remember Sicce used to make canister filters too, back in the day. I think they only make streamers now. Sacem was another canister make in the 80ies.

They were bought out by API and then Mars Fishcare I believe. they have been discontinued as of 2020. no longer made at all. it sucks balls. Because they were/are one of the best canisters out there. powerful and easy to run.
