What causes bent ventral fins in angelfish?

Bad breeding.
 
i got these from a very reputable seller(mike gibbs) and the fins arrived perfect. they have a slight bending and the bottom part of the fin(past the point where its bent) sometimes sway a bit as they swim, doesn't look like genetic problems as the bending does not start from the base of the fins, and mike gibbs is one of the most reputable angelfish sellers out there...plus they arrived fine as i mentioned earlier. this bending is only occurring in 1 of the angelfish out of a group of 14
 
That one is the one not to breed. There will always be throwback traits that pop up in any line. It's our job as breeders to prevent the amplification of these defects by not line-breeding them into the next generation. And 13 out of 14 being as perfect as you say they are is nothing to sniff at. Many of these defects do not become apparent until the fish matures. The seller did nothing wrong. Enjoy you 13 perfect and one slightly imperfect angels for what they're worth. :)

In my batches of angelfish that I breed there are always 4-5 that are disformed.
 
Kinfegill answered your reply to me perfectly. I answered a very general question with no specifics. What causes bent ventral fins? Bad breeding or to put in other words a genetict defect. I have never breed a batch of Angels that didn't have a few deformed specimens as stated above, most don't servive but if it's minor the defect goes unnoticed until the fish are much larger as in your case. I would not use the fish in any breeding projects you may undertake but other wise is normal in all other respects.

ventrals are the two long flowing fins right? im getting the impression that its the two fins they swim with now xD
they bend in the middle sort of like that certain point is weaker, sort of like some sort of slight fin deterioration? not rigidly bent :O

unless its a 90 degree bend, i dont see the problem? dorsal or anal fins being bent is considered a genetic defect but ventrals generally curve back?
