What cichlids can go into an 85gal hex?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hmmm two 10"+ Texas + other fish + little elbow room = a problem or death. One Texas needs a bigger footprint let alone two.

Green Texans aren't as aggressive as Texans. Or so it would seem. :) Hence why I suggested Green Texans specifically, not just 'any random Herichthys species'. They are predominantly omnivores, and do not take it out on their tankmates so often. Whilst many cichlids would chase feeders eagerly and wholeheartedly, Green Texans don't.

Which is why I would think it would be fine. The only issue is that the pair could quarrel, which is the biggest problem.

That's true but they are territorial and given least room to for individual territories there is bound to be fights. Especially with pairs.

True enough, but it'd be the same with a pair of Convicts, or a pair of Elliotis, or a pair of many other fish. XD If they're not gonna work, then well this size tank definitely won't help. Okay maybe for Convicts, but a pair of Ellioti and the male wants to kill the female, the female will die. :/

So yeah, I guess this is assuming one does get a 'good' pair.

That's true. Atleast with the smaller fish the opposing mate has more room to run since they take up less space.

Just do angels. These tall hex tanks are a nightmare for any bottom dwelling cichlid, which all of the cryptoheros types (cons), oscars, texas', firemouths, pikes, amphilophus types (red devils) happen to be.

Again, OP, angels and some medium bodied tetras / danios are your best bet for this tank. My personal thing to do would be to sell the tank to get one that has a larger footprint, but it is your tank and I think that if you're going to stock it, do so in the best interests of the fish

It is a HEX tank. No cichlid out there wants to be in a 20 gal tank. Essentially that is what an 85 hex is, it has no more floor space than a 20 gal reg tank. IMO those tall hex tanks are worthless and are only good for Angels, Discus or small dwarfs, or tetras. You want a large fish get a larger tank.

To the guy that said Green Texas are not aggressive. WRONG, Carpintis are just as if not more aggressive than the Texas.
