I've had a similar thing happen in the past so now I test my supply water before every change.

it happens to the best of us. try doing less amounts of water changes maybe twice a week. i honestly think 50% is to much to do per week. i do 50% like once a month on my smaller tanks, and 50% like once every 2 months on my larger tanks. my fish grow like weeds
