What do bluegill like to eat

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The ones that I've seen native to the east coast of the US eat minnows, meal worms, night crawlers, crickets... Pretty anything found in their natural habitat. Bluegill are members of the chiclid family. That being said, you should be able to feed them as you would other chiclids (Hikari Pellets, beefheart, bloodworms, etc.)

i had a native bluegill i pulled straight from a lake (hes now back in said lake) but i had him for a couple months, started off with minnows/feeder goldfish......then eventually switched it over to pellets

Good advice on the feeding, but bluegill are in the family Centrarchidae, along with largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, and other sunfish. Cichlids form the family Cichlidae.

Everything. We used to catch them on marshmallows as kids.

A broad spectrum cichlid pellet should be fine.

Thank you for the correction :)

I've kept game fish several times. Bluegills will eat anything from live foods to pellets and flakes. I used to catch cockroaches and watch the 'gills pull the legs off then the bass would eat the body

Anything edible lol
And why does your tank look so dirty
