I finally found a dealer that has both of the really hard to find African cichlids I wanted. Now, this will be the first time I've purchased fish and had them shipped. I was told by the breeder that due to the warm weather and the type of fish he can easily ship them 2-day.

Since this is my first time buying fish this way, I am wondering if there is anything additional I need to do to acclimate the fish before I put them in the tank? (Sadly, I don't have a quarantine tank--but I trust the breeder).

I know about the gradually adding my tank water to theirs. I know about rearranging the tank, feeding, etc. to distract the the current tenants, turning off the lights--that whole thing. I just wondered if there is anything you do to help them de-stress? I know the other fish will be curious about the new roommates, and I don't want them lethargic when I put them in the tank.

Hey, thanks! ;)

its prefer when they arrive to put them in separated tank "Quarantine tank "without any other fish for about week or something to be sure that the fish don't carry any disease and also to make the fish take some rest from the travelling
the Q-tank must be active tank "cycle -filtration etc" after u know everything is alright move them to ur community tank by the normal way
good luck

He said he doesn't have a quarantine tank.

I think you've got the process down pretty good.

Float the bag in the aquarium for approx. 15 minutes to equalize temperature. Then empty the contents of the bag into a net and introduce them to their new home.

This is the method for introducing new arrivals as per a well known online supplier I have purchased from several times.

you do not want to acclimate them by adding your water to theirs, just simply float them to equalize temperature and then put the fish into your tank like stated above.

I need to ask why I would not add any tank water to the new fish's water? This is what I do when I get new fish from the LFS and the only time I've ever had a fish go into shock was when I didn't do this.

Is this something you don't do when a fish has been shipped?

Thanks,

Drip method in a 5 gallon bucket.

I always put the bag in the tank wait approx 15-20 min for the bag temp to warm to tank temp then net the fish outta the bag - I never add foriegn water to my tanks.

I do however understand the "drip" method and adding water to the bag method to eliminate any PH adjustment shock.
