I too keep styrofoam panels at the ready, in case a winter loss of power may occur. I too have dropped all media into the tank, and found means of agitating the surface as much as possible, via bottles with holes as Duanes showed.
Most importantly, don't even think about feeding! and definitely don't feed for a couple of days if a extended period of no electricity took place.
Hard to believe, but extended power losses during summer can be just as dangerous or more, as the house can get quite warm. Even without power loss, my Crypts melted terribly last summer, and have yet to get back to the previous splendor.
